I'm a long time wearer of skate shoes. Love em. They are pretty durable, easy to find, and frequently come in synthetic fiber models. Best of all, I can get them in all black. Most athletic and skate shoes these days come in these Technicolor prints that make you look like you're wearing pinatas around on your feet.
However, skate shoes aren't so great for your feet. They bend in the middle, and typically have no arch support. Not a big deal when you are 20, but lame as hell when you're 40. Over time, these shoes have no doubt been the source of all manner of back and joint problems, and I don't want to end up being one of those old people who complains about their ailments all the time, "My bursitis! My sciatica! Christ almighty! Margaret bring me a stone so I can sand my corns, my bunions are killin me..."
So I ended up in a shoe store in Santa Cruz, and at the behest of my wife (most of the good ideas about my health come from her) I tried on a pair of Keen Obsidian WP's in black. Holy crap. I instantly noticed the difference. Like walking on a cloud of butt-cheeks. What a great shoe. Solid in the middle, good arch support, waterproof, breathable and they look cool. I only had one question: "what took me so long?"
